TM 01 - Introduction to Therapeutic Massage - 60 clock hours
Introduction to Therapeutic Massage is an entry level course that discusses the history of massage and how massage has developed into a professional career. The benefits and therapeutic value of massage will be delineated as well as legal and ethical issues which may arise during practice. This course is designed to serve as a foundation for further training in the massage therapy profession.
TM 10 - Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology - 200 clock hours
Anatomy/Physiology/Kinesiology is an introductory course which introduces students to the structure and systems of the human body and the medical terminology related to the body's anatomical structure. This course will prepare students to apply their knowledge in Laurel Highlands Therapeutic Academy's Clinical/Internship course and throughout their careers as Massage Therapists.
TM 02 - Integrative Massage - 100 clock hours
Swedish Massage is the most widely recognized and most commonly used type of massage. In this 100 hour course, students will learn body mechanics, pressure, transition and flow as well as how each component impacts the overall massage. Hands-on practice performing the techniques of Integrative Massage constitutes a significant portion of this course.
TM07 - Stone Therapy - 12 clock hours
In Stone Massage students will learn how to use both hot and cold stones, in combination with various massage techniques, to produce treatment that is adaptable to individual clients.
TM08 - Spa Services - 12 clock hours
Spa Services will discuss indications and contraindications to scope of practice issues, supplies needed and room set-up. Also discussed are ideas on how to integrate massage techniques and spa treatments.
TM 11 - CPR/First Aid - 7 clock hours
CPR/First Aid will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries. Students will be certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and First Aid upon passing the Final Examination and successful completion of course.
TM 12 -Pathology - 50 clock hours
Pathology provides an introduction to diseases, recognition of common signs and symptoms of disease and how the body interacts in disease.
TM13 - Pharmacology - 40 clock hours
Pharmacology is designed to expose students to the various medicines their clients are prescribed. The ability to use reference materials to assess and understand those drugs, their effects on the body and the implications for massage will be discussed.
TM14 - Touch Analysis - 40 clock hours
This class provides the student an opportunity to address the difficult and at times confusing dilemmas confronting touch therapy providers. Reflexive exercises and questions will allow the students to confront the seldom discussed and often personal issues that they will encounter
TM 04 - Massage Modalities - 57 clock hours
Modalities presents an introduction to the following specialties: Infant Massage, Shiatsu, Reiki, Sports Massage, CranioSacral Therapy, Reflexology, Canine Massage, Chair Massage, Aromatherapy and Prenatal Massage. Guest speakers will provide information on their areas of expertise.
TM 05 - Career Development - 42 clock hours
Career Development is designed to instruct students on methods to market themselves as Massage Therapists. Students will develop resumes, business letters, business cards and promotional brochures. Mock interviews will be conducted in order to prepare students for future employment.
TM 06 - Integrative Techniques - 30 clock hours
Integrative Techniques is based on traditional orthopedic assessment protocols. In this course students will learn the signs, causes, symptoms and treatment of many conditions and injuries. Students will evaluate each area of the body, the scientific basis for treatment and assessment of outcomes.
TM 30 - Clinical /Internship - 100 clock hours
As the final course in the program, Internship is designed to allow students to practice the skills and techniques learned during the classroom phase of their training. In addition to practicing massage techniques on clients of the school, students will have opportunities to utilize the communication, interviewing and documentation skills learned throughout their training.
